GOING GREEN THE TIMBERLAND WAY

Over the past 16 years, in line with the brand’s longstanding commitment to environmental stewardship and community building, Timberland has celebrated Earth Day with community service events around the globe. This year, the brand will host events in more than 100 locations worldwide, expecting some 30,000 hours of service to be performed by more than 5,000 volunteers in April and May.

On 22 April 2014 (which coincides with the worldwide commemoration of Earth Day), Timberland geared up our green efforts through a unique partnership with National Parks Board at Sungei Buloh Wetlands Reserve. The day dawned bright and early with a guided nature walk off the beaten path and followed by an intensive hour of coastal clean up.

Committed to the four objectives of conservation, education, recreation and research, the Sungei Buloh Wetlands Reserve is an important site in the East Asian Migratory Flyway for waders and to maximise the carrying capacity of the reserve for birds and other wildlife. It seeks to encourage an appreciation of the beauty and diversity of wildlife and utilise it as a site to contribute to regional and internal research.

The Costal Clean Up event allowed all to appreciate the natural beauty of the park, and understand the effects of trash washing up the shores of the mangroves. A morning’s work saw approximately 200 kilograms of trash retrieved across an approximate 200-metre stretch of coastline.

To wrap up the day, a trip to Bollywood Veggies Farm was organised for lunch, where participants had the opportunity to engage in farm activities and recognise the need to preserve the natural habitats around us for better living. The excursion to this local farm was also part of the effort to educate participants on sustainable living practices available in Singapore and the advantages of supporting local produce.

This year, 53 Timberland Singapore employees and community members have contributed 382 hours of community service with three pillar stones in mind: to demonstrate Timberland’s genuine commitment to the community; to educate, inspire and engage community members in the fight against climate change; and to create a positive impact within the community, focused on the environment.
