Timberland Singapore Earth Day 2013

TIMBERLAND CAUSES TO HEAL & GREEN

Forty-two years ago, the first nationwide environmental protest signalled the start of the modern environmental movement.Twenty million people came together to fight the rising tide of pollution and environmental degradation that would adversely affect the future of our planet. Today, Timberland stands with those, now over 1 billion strong, who share the belief that our environment is still in need of preservation and that through the power of civic leadership, we can make a difference by participating in service events around the world on Earth Day.

Timberland has recognised Earth Day with community service events for 12 consecutive years. Timberland-hosted Earth Day projects unite more than 250 volunteers at more 6 service sites (Japan, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia) around Asia.

This Earth Day 2013, Timberland Singapore employees increased environmental awareness and revitalising communities by forging a unique partnership with registered charity and IPC, Garden City Fund to set up a healing therapy garden at the Breast Cancer Foundation, located at 26 Dunearn Road. This is part of the National Parks Board's Community In Bloom Programme.

Timberland is pleased to join hands with these three partners and sees this partnership as a great way to unite our green causes to benefit a group of women through nature's healing powers.

On 22 April 2013, Timberland Singapore officially adopted 2 plots of land, each 50 square metres in size, at the premises of Breast Cancer Foundation at 26 Dunearn Road. With help and guidance from the National Parks Board, Timberland staff have cultivated a variety of herbs and edibles which will also be utilised to sustain another therapy programme through cooking lessons.

We see this as a holistic approach to our CSR programme where we are able to bring another piece of greenery into our City in a Garden, which will in turn bring healing to a group of survivors of breast cancer.

CLARISSA'S EXPERIENCE

It was my first time commemorating Earth Day with Timberland. I must say that I am really honoured to be part of this fun experience, contributing to the environment as well as doing a part for the community, specifically to the patients of Breast Cancer Foundation. I really learnt a lot through this event and it put my green fingers to a test; learning that certain insects or weeds actually do harm to good plants. Also, knowing that the plants we have planted will be beneficial to the cancer patients in a therapeutic way.

Apart from that, I have gained more knowledge about Breast Cancer; how to detect it, what it does to the body, as well as knowing how to deal with it physically, emotionally and mentally. I also realised that being diagnosed with breast cancer can actually bring about many other issues, such as affecting relationships and the importance of support from the family in times like these. After hearing from a cancer survivor, I have a better understanding of how to deal with it should it happen to any of my friends, or even myself.

I am happy to do my part with Timberland, making our place a better environment and helping those in need.
