Expert Advice: Styling Men’s Shorts
Twenty First Century Gent, aka British menswear blogger Ben Heath shows us his summer style.
Hot weather is here at last, which means I can finally embrace summer style. Whether it’s an impromptu barbeque, canal walk or rooftop cinema screening, this is the time of year to ditch the long pants and go for shorts.
I styled four looks that I’ll rarely stray from during these hot summer months. I kept the looks varied with versatile shoes and an array of shirts.
I paired together these Canobie Lake Denim Shorts with boat shoes (the Camp 73 Boat Oxford) and a plain white tee. Denim shorts are essential to my summer wardrobe as they look smart or offer a casual option for days spent on the grassy fields of Hyde Park. The shoes complement the outfit well and offer an earthier tone, keeping with the rural theme. It’s the perfect casual look for days spent outdoors.
For slightly dressier occasions, go for denim shorts with a smart button-down shirt. For this look, I wore the button down shirt with my sleeves rolled and the Canobie Lake Denim Shorts. Paired with brown Odelay Slip-On Venetians, I’m ready for evenings out with friends on vacation (and the Venetian shoes are easy to slip on and off when lounging in the park).
Nothing beats a bold print during summer, and I paired the Parker River Indigo Pattern Shirt with classic chino shorts – the Squam Lake Cotton/Linen Chino Shorts. The tropical-inspired print on the shirt really gets you in the summer mood and I love that these shorts are super lightweight.
The Newport Bay Canvas Slip-On shoes complete this outfit. It’s extremely comfortable and a great casual look for the man on-the-go. Perfect if you’re rushing from A to B in the heat of the summer sun or exploring the sandy beaches of San Sebastian.
For my final look, I paired the Squam Lake Cotton/Linen Chino Shorts and Odelay Venetian Slip-On shoes with a pink shirt. Color is very important to me in the summer months and the pink shirt works really well with the stone-colored shorts. A slightly more formal look, this is reserved for times when the day gradually turns into night. Smart casual at its best.
From ultra casual to dressed up for evening cocktails, shorts fit the bill as long as you style them appropriately. It’s all in the details.
